The Mountain

Elevations ranging from 5,900 feet to over 7,000 feet. More snow can fall on Terry Peak than anywhere else in the region.

With a summit at 7,100 feet, Terry Peak in South Dakota highest lift service beteen the Rocky Mountains and the Apls.   Reaching this elevation means the mountain can get up to three times as much snow as anywhere else in the region.  A vertical rise of 1,100 feet with 29 trails provides plenty of non-stop action and unlimited adventure.  In the event of a lean Winter, Terry Peak has high-tech snowmaking equipment that can blanket 60% of the mountain with man-made powder—ensuring the conditions are great all season long. 

 

A Little History

Beginning in 1936 The Bald Mountain Ski Club used a rope tow on Stewart Slope to offer adventure seekers a ride to the top to experience the mountain as a recreational ski hillI.  Soon after, the fun ended with start of World War II.  Several of the locals that were involved with the Bald Mountain Ski Club were drafted and assigned into the 10th Mountain Division.  

In1952 Black Hills Chairlift Company was formed and the first wooden chairlift was installed.  The first two years Black Hills Chairlift, Inc. d.b.a. Terry Peak Ski Area operated as a Summer Chairlift ride only.  It was the Winter of 1954 that Terry Peak operated as a ski area for the very first time.
