Moving Terrain Park to Homestake?

Posted by: Linda Derosier - 05/06/2010 10:39 AM (Summer Fun )

We are currently considering moving the Terrain Park from Snowstorm to Homestake as a Summer project.  By doing this we feel it would give us more terrain and a longer run to work with.  We're intersested in your thoughts - tell us what you think by posting a comment.

oh yes please for surely!! Especially if you could get in more jumps a lot more jumps. Then there could be more variety and give us terrain park riders way more progession, because right now with our small area of a terrain park we can't progress to our fullest. To progess, for me atleast, I had to go to Copper Mountain so I could learn tricks on jumplines and stuff. This would definitly be awesome if it happened.

A few questions- 1. what lifts would park riders be expected to ride? 2. Could homestake be open at the begining of the year? The Homestake run is facing eastward and is exposed to alot of sunshine, almost day in and day out. I feel the riders would have a disadvantage if they were forced to ride the red lift for park as it is alot slower than the suprise. However, if there was alot more man-made snow on homestake i think it could have the potential to be a great spot of progression. If Terry had the snow-making capabilities to produce enough snow to support a park comparible to larger resorts, then i would totally agree with and support this descision. With the extra space homestake would produce, i would suggest having an area with smaller jumps and rails and then have another area with larger, more advanced features for the better riders. This would keep beginers safe and allow the more advanced riders to progress in a place they could ride without having to drive 7 hours away.

What a way to ruin a great run. PLEASE DON"T DO IT. If you really must move it put it on Little Hope and keep the red chair open all week . There is plenty of room over there for both a park and regular downhill skiing.

YES! That would be so sick!

I do not agree with that decision unless you decide to replace the Empress lift with a high speed quad. Why not just do some dirt work and start the park further up Snowstorm? Or even think about another trail that has the fall line for a park but easier access to a quad?

I'm against moving it to Homestake. It is one of the few runs on the hill with an aspect that catches sun first thing in the day. The obvious place to move it, if it is going move, is upper Stewart Slope, which is presently not being utilized at all.

Do it!! just move it somewhere where all the little kiddies who are always just slowly cruisin through bein nothin more of a hazard wont be so inclined to go to it. PLEASEEEEEE!!!!!!!

Safety when doing the cut across from Empress to the Kussy lift is already a problem for skiers and boarders on Homestake and Hobo Queen, especially when the red lift isn't open.

Why not use Hobo Queen? If you take away Homestake, it is one less Intermediate run that is available as the current terrain park is a green run.

Thanks for all the comments/suggestions. Brandon, those are some valid questions and will help help us in making a decision. Keep'em coming guys and gals!

I do not like the idea. It would not be safe to ski on Terry Cutoff. Greg Akrop

I agree with whoever that was about moving it to little hope and keeping the red lift open all week. What would be cooler than looking for a place to make a bigger terrain park? A bigger terrain park with basically its own lift!

Move it but make sure to keep the flat top jumps!!

Have you considered the problems that would be created on the cut across? Maybe Black Moon should be considered as an alternative. Jean

i like the terrain park how and where it is but homestake would be an awesome spot for the park why not have two parks

Aside from negating the advantage of congregating all the groms in one beginner based area, the primary drawback that I see is the fact that Homestake ends with Inferno, a black diamond run. This kind of sucks for the beginner who wants to check out the park and maybe even session a feature or two, only to be led to a steep, intimidating run. Perhaps one half of Black Moon could be dedicated to some additional features. In truth, all of Empress would be ideal, but wouldn't fly with consumers. I think anywhere served by the 'red' probably isn't a wise decision, unless another chair is erected or if this area would be in addition to the existing park. I certainly applaud the contemplation of the endeavor and any forward thinking for TP! Now, let's cut every 4th tree down over in the 'glades' and turn it from hallway-skiing into actual tree skiing.

If you study the hill, the top of Stewart and the top of old River Run (which I grew up skiing way too long ago!) would be acceptable alternatives. The problem would be to navigate traffic at the end of the run and distributing people to the bottom of the yellow. Possibly a better alternate is to finally utilize the skiers right at the top of yellow, continuing over the top of International cut across to Half Moon with a ramp overpass. This would keep different skier levels out of the way of each other and keep the speed skiers and boarders away from the top of the yellow which is the most dangerous location on the hill. This area only becomes worse as traffic increases especially being used by the Terrain Park skiers. This option will also change the dynamics of traffic pulling more boarders to split up, ending up at the bottom of the blue or the bottom of the yellow, again easing traffic.
