Ode to The Empress (Red) Chairlift!

Posted by: Linda Derosier - 03/19/2012 5:13 PM (Winter Fun)

The Red Chairlift was installed in 1975.  For 37 years it transported the hardcore riders up Terry Peak over and over again.
If only it could talk, what stories it could tell.  The slow ride up was a place for the weary to relax, the chilled to shelter from the storm, and the bombarded a place to escape from the crowd.  We all know that life doesn't last forever and all good things must come to an end.  Thank you Red Chair, for the many years of service - some of us will miss you my red friend.

Badump, wrrr, wrr, wrrr, Badump, wrrr, wrrr, wrr, Badump. I don't know if that sound was Red Chairs heart beat or it talking to me. But I will miss that sound.

All my son, age 7, cares about is that the new one is red.

My favorite Red Chair story was in the late 70's being stuck on the chair for over an hour in a numbingly cold windy day. I vowed to be prepared after that so for the next number of years I skied carrying a fanny pack with rappelling equipment. Darn it never had to use though.

A very sad day. The red chair was a good friend. I was 15 when it came to be. Before during ski races , we would ski to the bottom of International and wait for the truck to haul us back to the blue chair for the next run. What a Ride. So long Red

How is it that the most hippy-ish lifties always ended up at the bottom of the red chair? Much love...

I was there the day the red chair opened in 1975. Guess that makes me pretty old, but hopefully we will all be tearing up the hill for many years to come. From the over 50 and going downhill fast club, thanks for all the great rides buddy.

My favorite run at Terry Peak. Even though I once had to be evacuated off the Red Chair via a sling when it was completely broken down for over an hour I will remember red fondly. On to new, faster, and better.
