The Area

Only minutes from Terry Peak Ski Area, visitors can still experience the history of the old west in the mountain towns of Lead & Deadwood, South Dakota. These exciting towns boast historic buildings with impressive architectural detail, museums and unique shopping, dining and lodging vendors.

Deadwood is designated as a National Historic Landmark and is listed on both the National and South Dakota Registers of Historic Places. Gambling was legalized in 1989, which has helped to fund the renovation of the many historic buildings and assist in the purchase of many original artifacts now on display in the Adams Museum and Days of ’76 Museum.

Lead, home of the original Homestake Gold Mine, is a historic mining town founded during the great gold rush of 1876 and home to one of the richest veins ever unearthed.  Although gold mining is a thing of the past in Lead, the Homestake mine is now home to the new Sanford Lab, which will be studying the science of Neutrinos and what those discoveries can offer to the future of our planet.

In addition to skiing and snowboarding, there are many more Black Hills winter activities within a convenient radius of Terry Peak Ski Area. One little-known gem is the Eagle Cliff Cross Country Skiing area. The Black Hills also offers a 300-mile snowmobile trail system, maintained by the State of South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Department, considered one of the best in the country. Numerous National and State Parks and Monuments, including Mount Rushmore National Monument, Custer State Park and Crazy Horse Memorial, are all within a two-hour drive.
