Snowmaking Project Upgrade -’24-’25
Learn about the Terry Peak 6.5 Million Dollar Snowmaking Upgrade!
Avid skiers and snowboarders from Terry Peak know the snowmaking system is the backbone that provides them with the best snow conditions possible. The Black Hills area often boasts 150 inches or more of snow annually. However, there are lean snow years when the snowmaking system is an invaluable resource for good, consistent conditions throughout the season.
Investing in upgrades to the snowmaking system is evident. The two-year, 6.5-million-dollar upgrade includes increasing the water pumping capacity from 1,000 gallons to 3,000 gallons a minute. It will also add to the current snowmaking guns and trails available for snowmaking. With these upgrades, we will strive to open more terrain sooner while offering high-quality, consistent conditions throughout the season.
Partnering with HKD Snowmakers and Snow Mountain Services has provided Terry Peak with professional consultation on this critical project, which will help us achieve the best possible outcome for upgrading the snowmaking system.
We are thrilled to announce the extensive snowmaking upgrades planned for the upcoming years. Our team has been diligently working on Phase 1 of this crucial project, which involves the replacement of hydrants, snow guns, and water lines. These upgrades will significantly enhance our snowmaking capabilities, ensuring our guests a more reliable and consistent snow surface.
We have partnered with HKD Snowmakers, Torrent Engineering, and Snow Mountain Services for consultation and overall design. HDK Snowmakers are professionals in the snowmaking industry and consider what they can offer their ski area partners to be nothing less than “Technical Magic.” HKD guns offer “KLICK” Technology with Impulse 12 Nozzle Guns. These guns are more accessible, safer, and more efficient for operators to use, and they provide a simplified adjustment to the air and water mixture in the field. Increasing the pumping capacity by three times will allow more terrain to be blanketed by snow during optimal temperatures.
The goal is to provide high-quality snow surface conditions early in the season and consistency throughout. Phases I and II of this project will continue until next summer with upgrades to hydrants, guns, and water lines on Snowstorm, Welcome, Kussy, Ben Hur, Holy Terror, and Upper Stewart. Additional water lines, hydrants, guns, and upgrades will be installed on Millsite. With this significant investment in the snowmaking system, we are excited about the future of Terry Peak
