The Best Kept Secret in the Midwest!

Experience the thrill of the highest lift-served skiing between the Rocky Mountains and the Alps at Terry Peak Ski Area. Rising to an impressive summit elevation of 7,100 feet, Terry Peak receives up to three times more snowfall than anywhere else in the region, creating exceptional conditions for skiers and snowboarders all season long.

With a vertical drop of 1,100 feet, 30 scenic trails, and an exciting Terrain Park, Terry Peak offers endless adventure for beginners, intermediates, and advanced riders alike. And when Mother Nature needs a little help, the mountain’s advanced snowmaking system can cover approximately 85% of the terrain with pristine man-made snow, ensuring reliable conditions throughout the winter.

After the lifts close, Terry Peak’s expert grooming team goes to work with a fleet of PistenBully groomers, carefully crafting smooth, perfectly maintained runs overnight. Wake up to freshly groomed slopes across all beginner terrain and most intermediate and advanced trails — ready for another unforgettable day in the beautiful Black Hills.

A Little History

The rich history of Terry Peak Ski Area dates back to 1938, when the Bald Mountain Ski Club introduced a simple rope tow on Stewart Slope, giving adventurous locals their first opportunity to experience the mountain as a recreational ski destination. What began as a small community effort quickly sparked a passion for skiing throughout the region.

That early momentum was temporarily halted by the outbreak of World War II, as several members of the Bald Mountain Ski Club were drafted into the legendary 10th Mountain Division, a unit renowned for its specialized training in mountain and winter warfare.

In 1952, a new chapter began when the Black Hills Chairlift Company was formed, and the area’s first wooden chairlift was installed — a major milestone for winter recreation in the Black Hills. During its first two years, Black Hills Chairlift, Inc., doing business as Terry Peak Ski Area, operated exclusively as a summer chairlift attraction.

Then, in the winter of 1954, Terry Peak officially opened as a ski area for the very first time, laying the foundation for what would become one of the Midwest’s premier winter destinations.
